USS James E Williams (DDG 95) Damaged in TOWEX

The NavyTimes is reporting a TOWEX mishap with the USS James E Williams (DDG 95) has resulted in the ship returning to port.

This is not how any Strike Group Commander wants to start the deployment.

The destroyer James E. Williams was limping back to Norfolk on Tuesday with a line fouling the ship’s starboard shaft after a training exercise went awry Friday 800 miles offshore in the Atlantic.

In a basic towing exercise, the James E. Williams was set to pull the destroyer Forrest Sherman when a nine-inch nylon line became disconnected and somehow wrapped around the James E. Williams’ starboard shaft.

No one was injured and the accident is under investigation, according to Lt. Charity Hardison, a public affairs officer for 2nd Fleet in Norfolk.

The Williams is expected to return to port Thursday. Hardison said it’s not certain whether the ship will try to rejoin the deploying strike group.

“That will be determined when they assess the damage [to the shaft] more clearly,” she said.
