The HMCS Victoria (SSK 876) Repair Bill

Unfortunately, the dent really did matter, because it effects the acoustics. HMCS Victoria (SSK 876) is fixed, but the fallout has been revealed. From the Globe and Mail.

Fixing a dent in one of Canada's used submarines cost more than twice as much as the navy predicted.

When technicians in Halifax discovered the dent in HMCS Victoria more than five years ago, the navy estimated it would cost $400,000 to fix. The actual cost of the repair was $1,039,494.

A spokesman for Defence Minister Peter MacKay said Canadian taxpayers are picking up the tab for the damage.

For some reason this reminded me that it cost $79M to replace the entire front of the USS San Francisco when she hit the underwater mountain. The costs in keeping the tools of war in top shape is not cheap. If you remember, this was the dent the BBC called "the size of a large pizza."

A million dollars does seem like a lot of money for this repair though, sounds a bit like the Navy had the yard 'fix' more than a dent.
