I've only been blogging for 11 months, and am not an expert on the topic. However, one thing I've learned about milblogs and the Navy blogging community specifically: They don't shape opinions, but they represent the broader opinion of the Navy very well. So when commentary breaks out on one topic, and the reaction is all negative, the odds are better than very damn good they reflect a broad majority opinion.
Start at CDRs, and make sure you read the comments.
Great commentary here and here. More here, here, and here.
Battle anthem? Guardian of Seapower? Nothing like an ethos statement reflecting core values with a psalm about how the US Navy guards sea power. Someone just proved they are doing a job they probably shouldn't be doing.
Isn't it about time to ask the question whether these initiatives are doing the opposite of what is the intended purpose, and are undermining morale more than contributing to a better Navy? What a waste that tax money contributes to this nonsense, there is clearly some staff somewhere serving no useful purpose. Meanwhile the Navy pays for this bullshit by committee, the fleet shrinks.
Whoever believes this is a demonstration in leadership fails to realize that it actually reflects leadership, and not in a good way.
