Iran's Not So Super Torpedo

Looks like the experts have been right all along, Iran's "Hoot" super torpedo is basically a clone of the Russian Shkval torpedo. FAS Secrecy Blog has some interesting commentary.

In other words, the Iranian Hoot is a visually interesting weapon system that looks 'cool' on video, but was a canceled cold war era Russian Navy project because it was deemed tactically inferior.

A torpedo that doesn't turn sounds like a winner because ships don't move...

Oh. Wait. Doh!

I've suggested in the past the "Hoot" is over rated, and this confirms it again. If you fear the "Hoot" threat, you should probably watch out for the Iranian stealth aircraft program too, I heard the IRGC leader guy tell the Persian press how unstoppable it is.

Hopefully people will stop exaggerating the conventional weapon threat of Iran and concentrate on the nuclear issues.
