The third littoral combat ship will be named for the city of Fort Worth, Texas, the Navy secretary’s office announced Friday...I was kind of hoping the Navy would name the next Littoral Combat Ship USS Liberty, that incident never goes away until another ship named USS Liberty begins a new reputation under that name for the Navy.
A Navy spokesman at the Pentagon could not say which hull form Fort Worth will take. However, specifications matching the Lockheed Martin version were provided in the announcement.
The ships are named for American towns with patriotic names or histories. The first, Freedom, was commissioned Nov. 8 in Milwaukee, Wis. The second ship, Independence, is expected to be delivered to the Navy this year.
I wonder if any reporters at the event asked whether the hull number would be 3, 5, 7, or 8. Think about it...
