Paul McLeary has the quote at Ares.
“I have some of my best people in the war colleges right now. I need my top officers—who have had a break, whatever that break is—you know where I need ‘em? I need ‘em in Afghanistan. But if I reach in and grab an officer and jeopardize that officer’s career, then that really puts that officer in a really tough spot. We need some creative thinking on how we can do both. Get somebody that was headed for the war college into the fight, and make sure that their career…is in good shape.”There are a couple of ways to read this. Either the Army is doing the right thing and putting their best officers through more school as to set up a final phase of the war, or Mullen is saying the Army is basically telling their best officers that right now they have to serve the Army's broken peacetime promotion system instead of serving their country.
Are we a nation at war? God bless Mike Mullen for speaking his mind.
Check out what else Admiral Mullen said over at Ares, in particular, asking about the Marines...
