- 283 active ships are in service. 127 (45%) including six carriers and five large-deck, amphibious ships are underway.
- 10,203 Individual Augmentees, 5,420 of which are mobilized Reserves, are deployed on the ground around the world in support of overseas contingency operations.
- USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53), USS Sirocco (PC 6) and the Coast Guard ships Baranof, Monomoy, and Wrangell are supporting Combined Task Force Iraqi Maritime, conducting maritime security operations in the Northern Arabian Gulf supporting the Iraqi Navy.
- USS Gettysburg (CG 64) arrived in the Republic of Seychelles after turning over 17 suspected pirates to authorities in Mombasa, Kenya. Gettysburg is the flagship for Combined Task Force 151, a multinational task force established to conduct counter piracy operations.
- A platoon from Explosive Ordinance Disposal Mobile Unit 2 supports Army Special Operations Force direct action operations in Iraq.
- Thirty-two Navy Reservists and two Reserve physicians from 2nd Battalion 23rd Marines are manning their Battalion Aid Station, participating in convoy operations, and assisting with the conduct of security patrols in Anbar Province, Iraq, as part of ongoing operations with Multi National Force - West.
- USS Bataan (LHD 7) and the ships of the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group are operating in the 6th Fleet area of responsibility, conducting maritime security operations and providing support to elements of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit as they train in Souda Bay, Greece.
- The U.S. 6th Fleet flagship, USS Mount Whitney (LCC/JCC 20), is conducting training with armed forces from 12 different nations in the Baltic Sea during exercise Baltic Operations 2009. BALTOPS is the largest multinational naval exercise this year in the Baltic Sea.
- USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) is anchored off of Tumaco, Columbia, conducting operations in support of Continuing Promise 2009. Comfort providers see more than 1,500 patients, including several surgeries, and continue veterinary services and dental services. The President of Colombia, Alvaro Uribe Velez, visits and tours Comfort.
- Patrol Squadron (VP) 45 is forward-deployed to Comalapa, El Salvador. The squadron's mission is to support surface units deployed for counter-illicit trafficking operations within the 4th Fleet area of focus.
- USS Jarrett (FFG 33), USS Gary (FFG 51), USS Carr (FFG 52) USS Simpson (FFG 56), and USNS Robert E. Peary (T-AKE 5) are in the Eastern Pacific. Ships are conducting counter-illicit trafficking operations which consist of intercepting human and drug traffickers within the 4th Fleet area of focus.
- Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 40, USS Doyle (FFG-39) and USS Ford (FFG-54) are in port Callao, Peru, conducting preparations for an anti-submarine warfare exercise in the Eastern Pacific with three Peruvian Type 209 diesel submarines and two Peruvian frigates.
- Dutch commercial vessel, Fairmount Expedition (FEXP) sailed toward the downed Air France Flight #447 search area in the Atlantic, and Dutch commercial vessel, Fairmount Glacier (FGLA) got underway, also headed toward the search area. Two United States Navy Towed Pinger Locators are welded, secured, and aligned onto these vessels, equipment that will be used to help locate the flight deck recorders ("Black Boxes").
- Approximately 30 divers from Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent are in Barbados with the U.S. Navy divers from Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit (MDSU) 2 conducting hull and pier inspection dives as part of Navy Diver Southern Partnership Station 2009.
- More than 1,300 Sailors and Marines from Task Group 73.5, USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49), USS Chafee (DDG 90), and USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93), participate in Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training 2009 in Singapore.
- Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 11 are deployed throughout the Horn of Africa constructing schools, medical clinics, and quality of life upgrades for camps in Djibouti, Uganda, Ethiopia, and the Comoros. NMCB 11 constructs an expeditionary bridge that allows safer and greater access to isolated villages in a rural part of Uganda.
- Military Sealift Command oceanographic survey ship USNS Bruce C. Heezen (T-AGS 64) is conducting underwater search operations off the coast of Vietnam in support of the U.S. Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command's 95th search mission in Vietnam.
